All About Us

I never quite know what to say on these pages, do you really want to read our entire life stories or are you simply after a brief summary …………?  So I think I will go for the happy medium rather than bore you to death!

This is me .... in my trans Africa days!

This is me …. in my trans Africa days!

I am Debs and my husband is Thiemo we co-founded Africa Expedition Support in 2005.  We  previously worked for a number of overland tour companies leading expeditions throughout Africa and the Middle East.  In 2005 we had a bit of a career crises ….. after so many years working on the road and living out of backpacks we decided it was time to move on.  However, we really did not know what we wanted to do, after being gypsy’s for so many years we knew that going back to 9-5 Monday to Friday was not for us.

At the time we were owed quite a bit of money from our employer …. a long story, but instead of receiving cash we received an overland safari truck (our old trans truck Medusa).  So there it was, in front of us, plain and simple …. we start our own overland company.  I guess deep down we always knew this was where our heart lay, after all we had both been on the road for over 10 years.

We are not originally from tourism backgrounds.  I am a trained Nurse and worked for many years for the Department of Human Services in South Australia (my original home) coordinating Communicable Diseases programs for migrants and refugees.  Thiemo, originally from Germany, had his own landscaping business and worked on construction sites as well as a long distance truck driver.  That was long before I knew him!

At separate parts of our lives we both needed a change, and nothing like travel to give you a different perspective on life.  Little did we know where this path would lead us.

We originally met in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2003 while working for different overland operators.  Thiemo claims I ignored him, my version of the story is I had just driven 12 hours from Arusha to Dar es Salaam and was shattered, so headed to bed rather than take up an invitation for a beer.  We met again a few months later in Zimbabwe, when Thiemo asked if I wanted to lead a Western Trans Africa overland expedition with him.  I jumped at the opportunity to receive my overlanding wings.  The rest is history!

So 8 years on and here we are.  We are now based just outside of Nairobi, Kenya on the edge of the Great Rift Valley.  While Thiemo and I still run short trips with clients, we now employ crew for the longer expeditions.  Over the years our fleet has grown and our love of Africa has grown with it.  This is home.

We are not the run of the mill tour operator …………. we have never been ones to conform to the pressures of society.  We offer unique tailor made tours like guided self drive expeditions and school group safaris with a community service focus.

We have strong community ties and enjoy seeing our clients of all ages have their values and beliefs challenged by what they see and experience.  Living on the African continent allows us to transfer our passion to our clients, and allows us to break down some of the myths sensationalised by western media.

This blog enables us to share information about Africa on a broader platform; so expect to see a range of articles, photos and even recipes (my other passion is cooking).  We sincerely hope you enjoy reading our views, and ideas as much as we enjoy writing them.  I am also confident some of our passion for the most diverse intriguing continent on earth will rub off !
